  3. Book your flight and start planning your trip.

Maximizing Your Miles

Rebooking for Savings

For members with existing award bookings during the promotional period, it's worth checking if the award rate has dropped. If you find a lower rate, American Airlines allows you to cancel your current reservation and rebook at the new, more favorable redemption rate, ensuring you get the best value for your miles.

Which Card to Use?

It’s important to remember to use a credit card that has travel insurance built in. These cards will cover your trip as long as you put the taxes and fees (the “$6”) on the cards, and they’ll also earn you 3x to 5x points. My three favorite cards for this are the The Platinum Card® from American Express, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, and the Chase Sapphire Preferred® The only catch with the Platinum Card is that you’ll want to make sure you have it booked as a round trip (two one-way tickets count).

The Hold Strategy

American Airlines lets its AAdvantage members hold all flights for 24 hours for FREE! This is a unique airline benefit but it gets even better. When you’re booking an award ticket, American Airlines often lets you hold that ticket FOR 5 DAYS for free! This is how I hold multiple itineraries and then once I know exactly what I want, I book them with one of the previously mentioned cards.

Final Points

American Airlines' award sale is a rare opportunity to leverage AAdvantage miles for maximum benefit. Whether you're planning a spring break, a family visit, or just a change of scenery, this sale offers incredible value. Remember, the booking window is tight, and with a finite number of seats available, prompt action is advised to secure your spot.
