With summer right around the corner, American Express fans are still eagerly awaiting any updates or news for the American Express Green Card revamp. A few months ago rumors began circulating about the supposed summertime release of the new American Express Green Card. The chatter surrounding the Amex Green Card’s revamp could be promising with the recent updates to the American Express Platinum, Business Platinum, Gold and Business Gold Cards within the past two years.
On 5/13/19, Reddit user nufsixes created a reddit post on the American Express subreddit about the Amex Green Card update. Keep in mind that this is pure speculation at this point and there is no way to confirm the credibility of the post right now.
nufsixes posted:
"So the company I work for is releasing a product in mid September in collaboration with the American Express Green Card. So this is leading me to believe this will be around the time AMEX gives us an updated Green Card. I know there’s been some speculation around here so thought I’d throw a little insight out there. There will also be a credit for Amex users who buy our product!"
Other redditors began inquiring about what the "product" may be. nufsixes vaguely answered by saying "Ding ding ding" when another redditor, BizzareBreak89 asked if the product was "Luggage or toiletry bags"? Again, this is all pure speculation, but it is interesting and exciting! It would not be unlikely if American Express partnered with a travel related luggage or bag company.
Another speculation was gathered on Instagram by users @thiscory and @vksingh91 after actor, TV host and animal lover Amy Bursor (@amybursor) posted a glamour shot on 5/14/19, with a caption reading:
"Yesterday I got to shoot a campaign for a well known credit card. Can't wait to see how it will turn out! #grateful #hurryupjune"
The most interesting part of this post is the hashtag: "#hurryupjune", that Amy used. From this hashtag we can assume that this "well known credit card" may possibly be released in June? Many people on the Instagram post asked Amy if this post was related to the American Express Green Card, and she respectfully answered that "you can all find out when it comes out in June". Final Point
Our initial thoughts when seeing the reddit post was a potential partnership with Away Luggage. Away has been growing rapidly in the baggage space with their sturdy and tech-savvy travel bags. American Express has been following a trend of providing statement credits such as the Saks 5th Avenue $100 annual credit on the Platinum Card or the $120 dining credit for Shake Shack, Cheese Cake Factory and Ruth’s Chris on the Gold Card. Our other potential Away related speculation is Amex providing Green Card holders with a limited time only Away luggage color option. This seems likely because Away has released limited color runs to select stores such as Nordstrom in the past. Amex was extremely successful with the limited released of the Rose Gold Card which promoted exclusivity. Could we be seeing a rare Amex Green luggage color option soon?
Overall, we are excited to see a much needed re-release of the American Express Green Card. Whether it be in June, July, August or September the card is in dire need of revitalization. As of right now, it is very difficult to recommend the American Express Green Card due to its subpar reward earning of 1x Membership Rewards on all purchases, 2x Membership Rewards on amextravel.com, the $95 annual fee, and its lack of a public sign-up bonus. The Points Passport strongly recommends that if you are interested in the American Express Green Card, be patient and see what the summer brings! Hopefully a beautiful new card with valuable new rewards and a big sign up bonus. The countdown is on!
