To the Point

Is there something that you’ve been considering buying all year but haven’t pulled the trigger on yet? Whether it’s gifts for friends and family or a simple home upgrade, now is the time to make sure you take advantage of one of Platinum Card® from American Express’s best American Express Offers of 2020: get a $100 statement credit when you spend $100 or more at Dell.com! To be honest, we don’t normally shop at Dell.com, but when an offer like this comes along and it’s stackable with other deals, it’s just too good to be true and we used it to purchase a $229 Google Nest Hello Doorbell for under $100! Let’s explain how we pulled off this crazy deal!

The Google Nest Hello Video Doorbell at Dell.com normally retails for $229 plus tax.

What is the American Express Offer for Dell.com and How Does This Work?

Back in May 2020, American Express refreshed some of The Platinum Card’s benefits to better reflect trends in consumer behavior. From wireless phone bill credits to streaming credits for your Netflix binging, American Express really found a way to bring value for its cardmembers. They didn’t stop just there, in fact, there have been numerous Amex Offers that have been quite lucrative. The most outstanding one is this: earn a $100 statement credit when you spend $100 or more at Dell.com!

At first, there wasn’t much at Dell that interested us throughout the year, but then we saw the golden opportunity right after Black Friday and Cyber Monday: $65 off of the $229 Google Nest Hello Video doorbell, bringing the price down to $179 plus tax. We didn’t want to stop there, and in fact, we found a second Amex Offer for +1 Membership Reward point per dollar spent on top of the +1 Membership Reward that Platinum Card® from American Express already earns on everyday charges.

That brings us to a total of +2 Membership Rewards points on the $179 Google Nest Hello Video doorbell. Next up, it was time to check Rakuten. Rakuten is well known for its generous cashback shopping portal, but it’s possible to link your Rakuten account with your American Express Membership Rewards account to earn Membership Reward points instead of the cashback. Rakuten converts the cash to Membership Rewards at a ratio of 1:1. Since we value Membership Reward points at 2.0 CPP (Cents Per Point), this essentially allows us to double the value we receive from Rakuten. Let’s stack it up and break down this deal:

+ $229 Google Nest Hello Video Doorbell

+ $65 Dell Promotion Price

+ $0 Shipping

= $179 Dell.com Cost

+ $16.56 CA Sales Tax

= $195.56 Total Dell Transaction

- $100 Amex Offer

= $96.56 Net Cost (On The Platinum Card)

The 2020 Dell Amex Offer saved us $100 simply by adding it to our card and spending over $100 at Dell.com!

Here's the order invoice from Dell.com. We'll receive a $100 Statement Credit on our Platinum Card, instantly dropping our total cost to $95.56 on our credit card statement.

Now let’s add in the points:

  • 179 Membership Reward points from Platinum Card® from American Express (1x MR/dollar)

  • 179 Membership Reward points from the Dell Amex Offer (1x MR/dollar)

  • 358 Membership Reward points from Rakuten 2% back (2x MR/dollar)

  • 716 Total Membership Reward points

  • At 2.0 CPP ($0.02/MR), that’s worth approximately $14.32

$96.56 Cost - $14.32 Membership Reward points = $82.24 Net Effective Cost

The second Amex Offer allowed us to earn an additional +1 Membership Reward point on each dollar we spent at Dell.com, bringing in another 179 Membership Reward points.

When we combined the Dell promotion, the $100 Amex Offer, the +1 Membership Reward point from Platinum Card® from American Express, the +1 Membership Reward point from Amex Offer, and the +2 Membership Reward points from Rakuten, we ended up getting the Google Nest Hello Video doorbell that would have cost us $250.18 (with tax) for a net effective cost of only $82.24! That’s a total savings of 67% off, saving us over $167 simply by stacking a couple of deals and using our Platinum Card® from American Express!

Final Point

Let’s face it, expenses are a challenging part of life but they don’t have to be stressful once you know a few tips and tricks that can help you save on everyday expenses. If we had paid cash, used a debit card, or even a different credit card without any of these offers or bonuses, we would’ve wound up spending $250+ on the same Google Nest Hello video doorbell that we purchased for a net effective cost of only $82 with Platinum Card® from American Express! This modern home upgrade will link with our Nest video cameras and security system, bringing us much-needed peace of mind in these uncertain times.
