Chase Freedom 2020 Quarter 2 Categories

New Quarter New Categories

If you are a Chase Freedom cardholder, with every new quarter, comes new 5% bonus categories. The Chase Freedom earns 5% cashback or 5x Chase Ultimate Rewards and rotates categories quarterly. Each quarter, you are required to activate the earnings, which will require about a minute of work, four times a year. Luckily, it is easy enough to log into your account and click the "activate" button. Don't forget to do this or you'll be missing out on some serious points or cashback! The 2020 Q1 earnings included 5% or 5x Ultimate Rewards per dollar spent at Gas Stations, Internet, Cable, and Phone Services, as well as Streaming Services. If you haven't done so already, you can still take advantage of these Q1 2020 bonus categories until March 31, 2020. Chase just announced the 2020 Q2 bonus categories for April 1, 2020, through June 30, 2020, which will include Grocery Stores, Fitness Clubs, and Gym Memberships. Keep in mind these bonus categories have a cap of $1,500 in spend, which equals a total of 7,500 Ultimate Rewards earned. Also remember, that if you hit that $1,500 cap before March 31, 2020, you will only be earning 1% or 1x back after and on all other non-category purchases. When you hit that maximum spend, we recommend switching back the specific spend on to the card in your wallet that makes the most sense to optimize points earning. For example, we will be switching our grocery shopping spend to the Chase Freedom to take advantage of the 5x Ultimate Rewards points, but after we hit our cap, we will switch the spend back to the American Express Gold Card as to not miss out on those 4x Membership Rewards points! We will also switch our gym membership fees to the Chase Freedom, but after we hit the cap, we will switch back to our Chase Freedom Unlimited or American Express Blue Business Plus respectively, as to not miss out on any points!

2020 Quarter 2 Categories

Grocery Stores - After housing costs, a household’s next highest expense is typically food. During 2020 Quarter 2, the Chase Freedom card lets you earn 5% cashback, or 5x Ultimate Rewards points back for the grocery shopping you will be doing anyway. If you spend $500 a month on groceries during Q2, you will be able to max out your 7,500 Membership Rewards points. Please note, Chase has excluded Walmart and Target from the grocery store list. You will not earn 5% back at these two stores. Check Chase's full list of participating merchants here

Fitness Clubs and Gym Memberships - Earn 5% back while you work out! Chase provided a full list of participating facilities here, which include big gym names like LA Fitness, Orange Theory, YouFit, Lifetime Fitness, and Soul Cycle. Please note that merchants that specialize in therapeutic services, massage therapy, weight management, or private personal trainers will not be included in this 5% back category. Make sure your gym or fitness club is a participating merchant before switching your spend over to the Chase Freedom Card

Final Point

One of our core beliefs here at Points Passport is to teach people to earn free travel on the daily spending you will be doing anyway. Everyone has to shop for groceries, and most people belong to a gym, why not get a 5% return on your spending? Once you've earned the points on money you would have spent anyway, you can book that weekend getaway you've been dreaming about! Pro Tip for individuals with multiple Chase Freedom Cards, you can earn 5x Chase Ultimate Rewards (up to 7,500) on as many cards as you have. Just for clarification, some people may find themselves with more than one Chase Freedom card after downgrading from an annual fee card such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred. If you have two Chase Freedom cards, this allows you to earn up to 15,000 Ultimate Rewards per $3,000 spent between your two cards.
